Sports/Deep-Tissue Massage

Deep-Tissue Massage
massageSarah offers a deep massage treatment, which focuses on releasing chronic tension and imbalance in the muscles and fascia. This allows the undoing of habitual holding patterns and brings deeper integration and balance, both structurally and energetically.  Treatments incorporate deep-tissue massage techniques and trigger point therapy with elements of Myofascial Release and Craniosacral Therapy.

Sports Massage
Sarah also works as a sports massage therapist and treats acute problems, soft-tissue injuries, muscular imbalances and postural misalignment.  Treatments can include a postural assessment, followed by exercises for strengthening, stretching and co-ordination skills.  With improving postural alignment, focus is placed on strengthening the stabilising core muscles of the body. Core stability refers to the abdominal muscles and back muscles and their ability to support the spine, keeping the body stable and balanced.

Trigger points may develop anywhere in the body, but are most commonly found at the sites of the greatest mechanical and postural stress. They are hyperirritable spots along a hard, rope-like or knotted band of muscle in which the tenderness reaches its maximum. The defining symptom of a trigger point is referred pain; that is, trigger points usually send their pain to some other site in a predictable pattern.
For example:

  • trigger points in the jaw muscle can cause a frontal headache and pain in the sinuses, teeth and ears.
  • trigger points in certain neck muscles can cause similar symptoms to those of carpal tunnel syndrome with pain, numbness or tingling in the hand, thumb and index finger.

As part of a massage treatment Sarah will locate the trigger points within a muscle and then compress the point for 15-20 seconds until the pain level is reduced.  A trigger point may deactivate immediately or may be treated several more times.

Myofascial Release is a hands-on technique, which releases restriction in the connective tissue (fascia) of the body, eliminating pain and restoring mobility and flexibility.  The fascia of the body is a densely woven network, rather like a spider’s web.  It wraps around and through every muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel, as well as the internal organs.  This fascial structure exists from head to toe without interruption and plays an important role in supporting the body.  Any restriction in the fascial web affects the balance and alignment of the whole body.  Within a treatment, slow, sustained pressure is given to the fascia, allowing it to elongate naturally and return to a fuller resting length.
