Acupuncture is known to have been practised in the Orient for over 2,000 years. During that time different methods and styles of practice have grown up but essentially they are all based on the premise that a state of health and wellbeing is achieved and maintained through the balancing of energy systems (or qi) within the body.
We have deliberately not included a list of symptoms that acupuncture may help. An acupuncture diagnosis is based upon different principles to the ones we are used to in western medicine, and is unique to each individual. The cause of one person’s migraine, bad back, eczema or infertility is unique to them and whilst some aspects of a treatment may be common to all, other parts will be geared specifically to the individual and their particular ailment. In short, most conditions are capable of being treated by acupuncture and we will always be happy to discuss potential treatment outcomes on the basis of our clinical experience.
Your initial appointment is usually longer than subsequent sessions as we will need to spend some time discussing the issues that are troubling you. We will also need information on your lifestyle, general state of health, previous illnesses etc. so that we have sufficient facts on which we can make a diagnosis. This will then form the basis of treatment which will involve the insertion of very fine sterile needles (not much thicker than a human hair) in to specific points on the body.
Sometimes the needles will be left in for a short time whilst on other occasions they may be inserted and withdrawn quickly. The needle sensation is likely to vary from a tingle to a dull ache but is momentary and usually mild in feeling. On some occasions a herb, commonly known as moxa, may be used alongside the needles to warm a specific area of the body.
Subsequent sessions are usually shorter in duration, normally 45 minutes to 1 hour.
The number of treatments required will depend very much on the person and the condition being treated.; as a very rough guide we would expect you to be aware of some improvement after 4-6 sessions. However we can discuss this with you in greater detail at the start of treatment. We appreciate that for many people the decision to have acupuncture is a step into the unknown. We therefore welcome any questions you may have before and during treatment and are happy to explain what we are doing as we go along.
